From screen to saving
Exploring how digital design can motivate young adults for financial literacy.
In Denmark, one in five young adults faces financial distress, impacting their life satisfaction and ability to thrive. Recognizing the urgent need to enhance financial literacy, our team of three Digital Design students embarked on a six-month research project.

The challenge was to understand the complex relationship between young adults' financial behaviors, attitudes, and their motivation to seek financial knowledge. We adopted a Research through Design approach, conducting semi-structured interviews, autoethnographic reflections, co-design workshops and iterative concept testing. This allowed us to capture emotional, behavioral, and cognitive barriers to financial literacy, while informing us of potential opportunities for creating optimal conditions for motivation. Using these insights, we developed a series of provocations and low- to mid-fidelity prototypes that explored motivational triggers – from gamification to storytelling and digital rituals. Our aim was not just to inform, but to emotionally connect and support young adults on their path toward better money habits.
The project culminated in a set of design guidelines that can be used by future designers working with financial literacy. These include recommendations on emotional design, digital rituals, feedback mechanisms, and the importance of soft nudging and social connection rather than shaming. The project was well-received by both academic supervisors and external stakeholders, including two Danish NGOs working within financial education and with financial literacy. It also received the highest possible grade (12 / A). Ultimately, the thesis demonstrated that financial literacy isn't just about knowledge; it’s about motivation, empathy, and social and emotional connection through the digital. It ultimately revealed that design can be a powerful tool to support that.
