Challenge
Marine Event wanted to improve their online presence with a modern and user-friendly website, that could effectively present their various facilities, activities and events at sea. Their previous website needed a clear structure for their services and a new visual expression that could attract and engage potential customers for their growing business.
Approach
We were two designers who wanted to make Marine Event's adventurous and maritime domain stand more out and reflected online. We started by analyzing their current website, pointing out areas that needed to be improved.
With Marine Event having little experience with maintaining their outdated website, W designed a Figma prototype to show them possibilities of how their information architecture could be improved, and how UX design principles could be applied to improve their website.
"How can we best present Marine Event's exisiting and new services for their growing customer base?"
Solution
We developed a new responsive website for Marine Event with a focus on aesthetics, functionality and user-friendliness. The website was designed with a clean and modern layout, that highlight the different activities through bigger pictures with motion - reflecting the active nature of their services.
We implemented an intuitive navigation structure, which makes it easier for visitors to find relevant information about equipment and facility rental, event-booking and pricing.
Finding the areas of improvement
Before meeting with Marine Event, we analyzed their website as it was, noticing several areas which needed improvement. Frames of the original site can be seen below, and the points we noticed are described on post-its at the end of the section.
Frames from original website
The existing website had an outdated look with a confusing information architecture. The site needed a better hierarchy between elements, highlighting visual importance in relation to the content.
Clearer overview of prices
The price list did not contain all of their services, and needed a clearer division between the types of services - such as a clear division between equipment rental and event-booking.
Better presentation of services
Marine Event provide a lot of different services, such as rental of boats and equipment for water activities. They also create different events on their own little island, but the distinction between the products and who these cater to was not that clear.
Adding personality
We saw a great opportunity in incorporating more maritime elements, to convey Marine Event's brand better. The site lacked personality, but the services had great potential to conveyed through visual elements, which could add to the overall personality of the site.
The result
We created a hero section that highlighted the different activities, making the experiences feel more vibrant and intriguing. We also featured their famous sauna-barrel in its own section, to present it as a more distinct and calming experience. The different rental options were put in a card slider with photos and important information, to convey the services more effectively. To clear out questions and save the personnel time, we also added a FAQ. Marine Event's location was also hard to find for some visitors, so we made a map on their contact page with local landmarks, to convey a local pride of Karrebæksminde.
